In recent years, the so-called “disengagement from television” has been occurring among young people, due to an increase in viewing of Netflix, which provides movies and dramas through devices connected to the Internet, and YouTube, a video sharing service.
Nowadays, people are less likely to go out due to the coronavirus pandemic, and many people have settled into a stay-at-home lifestyle, so what kind of changes have occurred in the number of people viewing TV and video streaming?
Based on the results of a survey of 500 men and women (ages 10-60) conducted in 2021, we will compare television and video distribution, and analyze and explain the increase/decrease in the number of viewers and viewing trends.

While the amount of time spent on the Internet is increasing, viewership ratings for television, the terrestrial broadcasting industry, are rapidly declining. Possible causes include the diversification of lifestyles, the difficulty of real-time viewing, and the creation of a variety of entertainment content other than television.
In the online survey we conducted this time, as shown in the figure above, 500 men and women in their teens to 60s asked how much they watch TV and video streaming, and whether their viewing time has changed compared to before the coronavirus pandemic. We also investigated the situation in which young people are turning away from television, which is said to be noticeable.
Is there a TV at home?

In the online survey, we first checked to see if people owned a TV at home. According to the survey results, more than 95% of respondents said they owned one.
Most of the respondents said they “owned multiple devices” (approximately 48%) or “owned one device” (approximately 47%), “I used to own one, but I don’t now” (4%), and “I’ve never owned one” ( 0.6%) are in the minority.

What kind of programs do people who own televisions prefer to watch?
The viewing ratios for terrestrial TV, BS (free), and BS/CS/CATV (paid) are as shown in the chart above. It was found that viewing paid channels was low at 16%, while 85% of the total people preferred to watch terrestrial TV.

What kind of programs are preferred by video distribution services that can be viewed by connecting to the Internet?
The above chart shows the results for free distribution and paid distribution from TV stations, free distribution from non-TV stations such as YouTube, and paid distribution from non-TV stations such as Netflix and Hulu.
The overwhelming majority of people watch free streaming on YouTube and other sites, while the number of viewers for paid streaming by TV stations is sluggish at about 4%.
On the other hand, it is also noteworthy that more than 40% of people watch paid streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu.
Many people seem to watch dramas and movies using Netflix, Hulu, etc., instead of watching TV stations’ online distribution of paid programs.

Now that people are spending more time at home due to refraining from going out or staying at home due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection, has there been any change in the amount of time they watch TV compared to before?
In this survey, approximately 11% of respondents answered that their TV viewing has increased significantly. Thirty-two percent of the respondents answered that their viewing time had increased slightly, and more than 40% of them said their viewing time had increased. On the other hand, a total of about 8% of people answered that their TV viewing has decreased slightly or significantly, indicating that the number of people watching TV has increased during the coronavirus pandemic.

How has the viewing time of video streaming services changed due to the coronavirus pandemic?
According to the survey results, approximately 22% responded that the number had increased significantly. Approximately 39% of people reported a slight increase, and a total of more than 60% of people found that their time watching video streaming has increased.
The total number of people who decreased their viewing time was about 2%, so it can be said that many people’s viewing time has increased.

According to the results of a survey on the concern about young people (in their 20s) turning away from TV, it was found that free videos from sources other than TV stations, such as YouTube, are watched more than terrestrial TV, as shown in the chart above.
In addition, about 54% of the total watched Hulu and Netflix, which are paid distribution services. It can be seen that people in their 20s actively use Hulu, Netflix, etc., which they find interesting, even if they have to pay.

This online survey revealed that the number of viewers for both TV and video distribution services has increased during the coronavirus pandemic.
While the number of paid videos watched by TV stations is sluggish, paid video distribution services such as Hulu and Netflix are doing well.
In an era where needs are diversifying, it will be interesting to see what kind of comeback will be made in paid video by TV stations, and whether paid video distribution such as Hulu and Netflix will make further progress.
