The spread of the new coronavirus has had a major impact on the economy, not only for small and medium-sized businesses but also for large companies. The impact on foreign nationals working in Japan is no exception.
JELLYFISH Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo), which operates a business in the field of employment and education for foreign human resources, uses its own job change and recruitment site for foreigners, “Mixess,” to attract foreigners living in Japan. We conducted an online survey regarding the target population’s intention to change jobs.

According to a survey conducted from September 11 to 23, 2020, of the current status of 113 foreign nationals working in Japan, the most common answer was “I am considering changing jobs (47.8%).”
Combined with the second most frequently answered answer, “Already looking for a job change (25.7%),” it turns out that about 70% are currently looking for a job change.

Among foreign workers who started looking for a job early, 44.8% answered that they were having a difficult time. Combined with the 20.7% who answered “I am having a lot of trouble,” it becomes clear that foreigners residing in Japan are having a difficult time looking for a job.

Among foreigners working in Japan, the most common preference for employment was “good financial conditions” (26.5%).
This was followed by “It’s a good environment for foreigners to work in (20.4%),” “I can make use of my skills (18.5%),” and “There are plenty of benefits (10.5%).”
It can be seen that people expect high income and easy work when working in Japan.

Approximately half (56%) of foreign nationals working in Japan said that the most difficult part when changing jobs was the “job offer conditions”.
When asked about “recruitment conditions,” many of the specific comments raised were “companies demand N1 as a recruitment condition.” *N1 refers to Level 1 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test.
There was also a notable free-text response for N1 that said, “I am not provided with time to study or support for Japanese language education.”
The next most popular response, “It takes a long time from application to hiring,” accounted for 39% of the total.
On the other hand, it was also found that many foreigners living in Japan are having difficulty meeting the “employment conditions” required by companies. There appears to be a huge gap between foreigners who want their “personal skills” to be evaluated over “Japanese language skills” when looking for a job, and Japanese companies who place more emphasis on “high Japanese language skills.”
